Are you overthinking everything? Does it take longer for you to make decisions or rethink the ones you have already made? Do you have the tendency to delve into the past and think of events you could have done differently? Do you find it difficult to shut your mind from thinking what you don’t want to be thinking of? Then this article is for you. Here are 10 ways to stop overthinking in 2022. Read further to calm your mind and keep your headspace free for overthinking is indeed self-sabotage in slow motion.
Never overthink yourself into self-rejection
Get rid of the tendency to assume scenarios that have not even occurred in the first place. For instance, thinking that your job application might get rejected even before you apply for it. Remember that thoughts become things and the vibrations we send in the Universe come back to us, so it is always better to send positive intentions. Likewise while sending an email or a message an overthinker often tends to think, ‘What if they ignore my text? Should I send it or not?’ The answer is ‘Send anyway.’ Yes, shoot your email with positive vibrations and it will not go unanswered. The best you can do is to not overthink and overanalyze situations.
Is the situation alterable?
If you make any decision in life, prepare yourself mentally to stick with it. You ought to trust yourself and take responsibility for whatever you decide to do in life. However, if you feel that the decision you have made needs some revisiting, surely rethink it, however, if it is already done and dusted and you can’t do anything about it, then don’t consider giving it even a single cent of your energy. For instance, you resigned from your job willingly and are currently feeling good about it. However, now it has been a month and you feel you shouldn’t have made that decision. Well, can you change anything about it now? No right, so you shouldn’t consider giving it a thought, rather invest your energy in the present to look for new avenues.
Give things time and calm your mind
Well, you have just appeared for the final round of an interview the results of which will be out only after a month, but you spend most of your energy thinking if you will make it or not. This is when you need to take control of your thoughts and put your energy into the present rather than speculating the future. One needs to understand that overthinking and being anxious in no way helps you and has no impact on the result that you will receive when the time is right. Sometimes we tend to expect answers immediately but time has its own way of revealing it to us gradually. In such scenarios, overthinkers tend to create their own answers and assume situations and sometimes also end up reacting to them.
Take action-The power of now
You are not going to overthink your way to a better future, unfortunately, time travel is not real, or is it? Overthinkers generally have the tendency to procrastinate and not take action. Do you think you will be able to materialize any of your goals without acting upon them? When we overthink we end up wasting our precious time and energy which could have been put in the right direction for better results in the future. So do you have a long list of ideas or goals you wish to accomplish? Jot it down and act upon it before it’s too late. Just thinking and not taking any action has not helped anyone and never will.
Health starts in your mind
You can go to the gym, eat healthily, do yoga, drink water, and take vitamins, but if you don’t directly confront the negativity in your thoughts, you will never truly be “healthy”. Our health isn’t measured on scales, by the size of our muscles, or by the width of our waist. True health is measured by the quality of our thoughts and the peacefulness of our minds. So if you are wondering if working out and keeping physically fit would suffice, then you ought to know that mental health is more important which comes with thinking less and acting more.
Change the channel
Keeping yourself busy with an activity is the best way to change your mind. So if someday you can’t stop your thoughts from overflowing, then indulge yourself in something that feeds your heart and soul. Changing your frequency always helps to get over the constant thought that is bugging you and occupy your mind space with a relevant one.
Indulging in mindreading
This is when you are constantly trying to predict what other people are thinking about you. Remember, most people aren’t even paying attention; they spend more time thinking about themselves than thinking about others. Moreover, please know that what other people think of you has nothing to do with who you are as a person but who they are. It is always a good idea to focus on becoming a better person and take charge of your growth rather than thinking about what people have to say about you and your dreams.
Penning down your thoughts
Decluttering your thought patterns by jotting them down is the best method. Make sure you write down your solutions and not problems. Having your thoughts on a piece of paper rather than in your mind can simplify things to a greater extent. Once you find solutions make sure you act upon them to satisfy your mind. To stop overthinking, you must address the problems at hand. The problems and thoughts you list are the weeds creating stress and anxiety.
Scheduling time for self-reflection
Pondering on your problems for a long period of time isn’t productive, but a brief reflection can be helpful. Incorporate 30 minutes of “thinking time” into your daily schedule. During that time period, let yourself worry, ruminate, or mull over whatever you want. When your time is up, move on to something else and promise yourself to not delve deeper besides the dedicated time you have allocated for yourself. Set a limit on the time it takes you to make a decision.
Using the STOP acronym
Use the STOP acronym to remind yourself to Stop, Take time to read your own thoughts, Open yourself to possible situations, and Proceed with the next indicated step. This can help you to focus on the essentials and let go of extraneous thoughts that threaten to derail you.
With these simple steps, you can not only take control of your thoughts but also practice mindfulness which all of us need to incorporate in our busy lives to remain stress-free and happier. Overthinking not only gives fire to anxiety but also plays with your mental health, so have patience and keep watering your seeds.
